In November 2015, a rumor began circulating on social media that when Apple co-founder Steve Jobs passed away at age 56 in 2011, he delivered a speech or left behind a deathbed essay about the meaning of life. Whether true or not, it has a profound impact on the way we should all look at life.

I reached the pinnacle of
success in the business world.
私は、ビジネスの世界で成功し頂点に登りつめた。
　　　
In others’ eyes, my life is an epitome of success.
他人の目には、私の人生は、成功の典型に映るだろう。
　　　　
However, aside from work, I have little joy.
In the end, wealth is only a fact of life that
I am accustomed to.
しかし、仕事以外では、喜びが少ない人生だった。
人生の終わりが近づいた今になって思えば、私が積み上げてきた富など、
ありふれた人生の断片でしかない。
　　　
At this moment, lying on the sick bed and
recalling my whole life,
I realize that all the recognition and wealth that
I took so much pride in, have paled and become
meaningless in the face of impending death.
病院のベッドに寝ていると、今までの人生が走馬灯のように思い出される。
私がずっと誇りに思ってきた、人から認められるということ、富を得るということは、
迫る死を目の前にして、次第に色あせていき、今となっては何の意味もなさなくなっている。
　　　
In the darkness, I look at the green lights from
the life supporting machines and hear the
humming mechanical sounds,
I can feel the breath of God and of death drawing closer…
暗闇の中で、生命維持装置のグリーンのライトが点滅するのを見つめ、
静かに機械が奏でる電子音を聞いていると、
神の息吹を、そして死がだんだんと近づいていることを感じる・・・。
　　　
Now I know, when we have accumulated
sufficient wealth to last our lifetime, we should pursue
other matters that are unrelated to wealth…
今になってやっと理解したことがある。
人生において、十分にやっていけるだけの富を積み上げた後は、
富とは関係のない他のことを追い求めた方が良いということ・・・。
　　　
Should be something that is more important:
Perhaps relationships, perhaps art,
perhaps a dream from younger days …　
もっと大切な何か他のこと。
それは、人間関係や、芸術や、
または若い頃から追い求めてきた夢かもしれない・・・。
　　　
Non-stop pursuing of wealth will only turn
a person into a twisted being, just like me.
終わりなき富の追求は、人を歪ませてしまう。

God gave us the senses to let us feel
the love in everyone’s heart, not the illusions
brought about by wealth.
神は、誰の心の中にも、富によってもたらされる「幻想」ではなく、
人に愛を感じさせるための「感覚」というものを与えてくださった。
　　
The wealth I have won in my life I cannot bring with me.
What I can bring is only the memories precipitated by love.
私が勝ち取った富は、棺桶の中に一緒に持っていけるものではない。
持ち続けられるものは、愛に満ちた思い出だけだ。
　　　
That’s the true riches which will follow you,
accompany you, giving you strength and light to go on.

What is the most expensive bed in the world? –
“Sick bed” …
世界中で、最も価値のあるベッドを知っているかい？

You can employ someone to drive the car for you,
make money for you but you cannot have someone
to bear the sickness for you.
望むならば、あなたのために車の運転手を雇うこともできるし、
あなたのためにお金を稼いでもらうこともできる。
だけれど、あなたの代わりに病気になってくれる人は、誰もいない。
　　
Material things lost can be found.
But there is one thing that can never be found when it is lost – “Life”.
形ある物はなくなっても、また見つけることができる。
しかし、いったんなくなってしまうと二度と見つけられないものがある。

When a person goes into the operating room,
he will realize that there is one book that he has
yet to finish reading – “Book of Healthy Life”.
手術室に入る時、病人は、まだ読み終えてない一冊の本があったことに気付く。
「人生を健康に過ごすための本」だ。
　　
Whichever stage in life we are at right now,
with time, we will face the day when the
curtain comes down.
あなたが今、人生のどのようなステージに立っていたとしても、

Treasure Love for your family,
love for your spouse, love for your friends…
