"Palm Islanders" ; Its Formation & Activities

■ Background of Formation
Hawaiian music band "Palm Islanders" is organized by OBs of KEIO University Hawaiian Music Club called KBR.

In the summer of 1997, the members gathered at the church in Chigasaki and played music on a stage of garden party. This was very when each member, who reached mid 50's with more spiritual relaxation and the time to spare, began to think:

* how to make good use of individual's free time, and

* how to share a worthwhile life, a friendship and an emotion with many people surrounding.

It was concluded that the Hawaiian music band should be organized, utilizing precious experience of music activities during the university days. It was also agreed that the main scope of its activities should be the social services / philanthropy area, which would surely contribute to the human life & society, bringing joy and peace of mind.

■ Concept &/or Motto of "Palm Islanders"
A mind of ALOHA, namely, to develop worthwhile life,to deepen friendship,to share emotion, and to express gratitude.

■ Activities of "Palm Islanders"
In the on-going "old age" society, all members felt that care for the aged or promoting welfare should no longer be the subject matter of others. First, they held a mini concert at the old age nursing home,where one member's father was admitted. The attempt having been well received by all home staffs and tenants, they formally started their activity of visiting similar facilities, bringing their own music.

After a while, their activity was introduced by TVs or newspapers on several occasions. At present, Palm Islanders, as a "music delivery band", receives more than 20 invitations per year from various old age homes or institutions. Easy/gentle rhythm and melody of Hawaiian music often heals loneliness or sorrow of the aged &/or handicapped people, whilst the Palm members conversely receive profound appreciation or even strong mental energy from these people.

Other than volunteer visits to the old age homes, Palm's activity has gradually been expanded to such area as open show of several hula studios, participation in the local events, play at the wedding ceremony and/or various receptions. Palm also holds their own party at Christmas season every year.

Recently in January 2005, Palm was invited by Buddhist temple,"Choshouji" at Kanazawa Hakkei (Kanagawa), and gave music & hula performance just in front of Amitabha to nearly 100 guests. This was very well received by the chief priest, temple supporters and all other guests. Quite a unique and precious experience!
